He is the son of veteran actors Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt. He has two younger sisters Priya Dutt and Namrata Dutt. Dutt married thrice in his life. Sanjay married actress Richa Sharma in 1987. The couple was blessed with a daughter Trishala in 1988, who now lives in the U.S with her mother’s parent. His first wife Richa died in 1996 because of a brain tumor. He then married to Rhea Pillai in 1998 but they got divorced in 2005. Sanjay then married to Manyata Dutt after two years of dating in a private ceremony in Goa in 2008. On October 21, 2010, he became the father of twins, a boy, and a girl. Their names are Iqra and Shahraan.

Sanjay Dutt Controversy
The actor has been in light due to his involvement in controversies. The actor’s controversies are as;
- In 1982, he was arrested for five months for illegal possession of drugs.
- In 1993, he was arrested under provisions of Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act(Tada) for possessing illegal arms when Mumbai suffered from series of Bombay blasts. He was granted bail by the government in October 1995 but was re-arrested in December 1995. Dutt got bail again in April 1997.
- During the period of 2006-07, he has spent 7 months in Arthur Road Jail.
- On July 31, 2007, TADA court sentenced him imprisonment of six years for illegal possession of weapons. Sanjay applied against the sentence and got interim bail on August 20, 2007. Again on October 22, 2007, he was back in jail and applied for the bail again. On November 27, 2007, he got bail from the supreme court. On March 21, 2007, the supreme court upheld the verdict of TADA court but shortened the imprisonment from six to five years. He was given a month to surrender before the authorities.
- On May 16, 2003, Sanjay surrendered to Mumbai police. He completed his sentence and got released on 25 Feb 2016 after serving his sentence.
